We are looking for a talented Senior Electrical Engineer to join our team #NewPower Business Unit in Mississauga, Ontario.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

  • This applied technology, developing leadership position creates electronic hardware that is integral to Cummins’ products. People in these positions will typically develop and validate electronic sensors, actuators, control units or harnesses to ensure the consistent operation of Cummins’ products in a variety of customer applications .

  • Investigates highly difficult or specialized electronic hardware problems, understands causal mechanisms, recommends appropriate action, owns problem resolution and documents results.

  • Creates, manages, improves and applies electronic hardware development processes and tools. Processes include basic problem solving techniques (5 phase, 7 step, 8D or similar), design for EMC robustness, design for manufacturing, familiarity with embedded electronic hardware development process, requirements analysis. Tools include worst case analysis, circuit simulation (Saber, Cadence PSpice, or equivalent), DFMEA/PFMEA, Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), schematic capture, PCB layout (Mentor Graphics, Zuken, or equivalent), Specification Compliance Matrix (or equivalent).

  • Obtains input and negotiates with electronic suppliers and software development teams and delivers prototype hardware to application engineering teams.

  • Uses systems knowledge and expertise to make decisions in the areas of hardware architecture, electrical design, and mechanical design that impact functionality, unit cost, and schedule.

  • Responsible for review of less-experienced developers/testers’ work to ensure robust, reusable, and efficient design

  • Responsible for coaching and developing the next generation of technical experts.

  • Provides problem resolution leadership for complex systems with a high degree of ambiguity and often global business impact.

  • Leads the development and improvement of work processes and systems across function(s) within a global business unit or managing improvement across business units.

  • Coordinates and directs work of technical project teams, up to and including direct management of small to mid-sized teams.

  • Operates as the recognized multi-competency specialist or expert in a discipline or product area across a site or global business unit with responsibility for developing local talent (direct or indirect).

  • Coaches and mentors other engineers, project managers and cross-functional team members.

  • May also include academic or industry collaboration in a competency or discipline area.

Education, Licenses, Certifications

  • College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or other relevant technical disciplines is required. Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.

  • This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.


  • Prior Technical Specialist/Specialist Engineering equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving, quality decision making and providing technical direction and leadership to a project team(s). Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred

  • Has strong technical competency in a wide range of electrical power distribution competences: concept architecture design, selection of components, switchgear, cables, transformers, protection, harmonics, grounding, thermal management, lightning protection & EMC.

  • Designs large-scale electrolyzer LVpower distribution architecture (PEM). Experience with Medium Voltage is desired.

  • Delivers high quality project and product documentation such as design reports, single line diagrams, load lists, cabinet design, wiring diagrams & layout, component datasheets, grounding design and lightning protection concept, etc.

  • Is a reference on global low voltage design standards across regions (NEC, CSA 22.1, UL508A, IEC 61439, IEC 60204, IEC60076, IEC 62271).

  • Has experience in electrical designfor hazardous locations and therefore knowledgeable of area classifications, equipmentfor hazardous areas and different types of explosion protection methods.

  • Interacts independently with suppliers and OEMs to define the solution and verify its quality.

  • Supports manufacturing offirst-of-a-kind large scale electrolyzer. Develops guidelines for commissioning and service of equipment.

  • Acts as a local guidance to more junior engineers, follows the work and ensures quality of the work.

  • Expert knowledge of power distribution equipment (transformers, switchgears, cables, circuit breakers, protection systems, busbar systems, etc.)

  • Provides strong problem resolution leadership to the team, dealing with both technical and non-technical issues.

  • Must be able to handle a globalset-up (global team members, different technical requirements across regions).

  • Excellent communication skills to engage different stakeholders across different functions (technical, non-technical).

  • Must be able to deal with complex and sometimes contradicting requirements. Can handle ambiguity by decomposing major goals into achievable work packages.

  • Familiar with electrical CAD and electrical calculation software (WSCAD, EPLAN or Similar)

  • General knowledge in power electronics and transformer-rectification systems is a plus.

  • Passionate for power engineering and technology: Extremely proactive and curious, technically-savvy, rigorous, team player.
