We are looking for a talented Instrumentation Design Manager to join our team #NewPower Business Unit in Mississauga, Ontario.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

  • This entry level technical management position develops and delivers technical talent in a research, technology or product development environment. He/She manages the resources that maximize workgroup productivity in support of tactical business needs and implements short/near term business strategies with a focus on tactical execution. The position also includes maintaining strong working relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders both within the technical function and across the broader business.

  • Primary responsibility is the management and development most often of early career engineers within a technical center, business unit or corporate area, and making these people available to perform duties necessary to satisfy the businesses technical needs.

  • Provides problem resolution leadership for complex systems with a low degree of ambiguity and most often site or regional impact; helps get teams in place.

  • Supports the development and improvement of work processes and systems most often within the Technical function on a site or regional basis.

  • Coaches and mentors employees to provide guidance and direction on resolving problems, technical know-how, removing barriers to progress and career path planning. Assesses performance and provides feedback to direct reports.

  • Most often manages and applies existing work processes involving activities such as resource allocation and management, organizational and business change, customer/stakeholder management and knowledge management; all used for the purposes of enabling high quality decision making that meets business expectations.

  • Decisions made in this role may include resource deployment cost and timing allocations, project prioritization, personnel staffing, and Annual Operating Plan (AOP) management, the result of which can impact project cost and delivery most often within a site or region.

Education, Licenses, Certifications

  • College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or other relevant technical disciplines is required.

  • This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.


  • Prior Engineering or Specialist Engineering equivalent work experience in a product, technology or engineering service role with demonstrated success leading projects and influencing outcomes through either direct or indirect reporting relationships. Must have had managerial/coaching experience of at least one direct report or several indirect reports in a prior technical path role. Must have a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving, quality decision making, and direct or indirect coaching of lesser experienced engineers in a project team environment.

  • Focuses on the team development of instrumentation and control engineers. The I&C team works closely with the process team to define the specification of instruments and control valves as per P&ID. The scope of the team is the calculation and specification of instruments and control valves, P&ID review, participation in HAZOP/LOPA, instrumentation design for hazardous areas, wiring systems, etc.

  • Drives implementation of engineering processes, international standards (IEC, ISA, ISO, PIP, etc..) and design tools(for example, for valve calculations).

  • Manages a GLOBAL team of 5 to 8 instrumentation engineers, mostly focused on PEM and Alkaline large scale electrolyzer product development (80%) and other (customer projects, sales support, internal R&D projects)

  • Defines a technical expertise strategy for the team: Maintain and develops I&C engineering expertise, identifies, and develops a subcontractor network for niche areas, etc.

  • Drives the implementation of internal processes such as engineering standard works, technical guidelines, design criteria, calculation templates and sheets.

  • Coach junior and senior engineers to develop both technical and non-technical skillset. Performs 1-2-1 meetings, objective settings, performance evaluations (Cummins Talent Management System)

  • Engages with the product managers and technical project leaders to decompose the product roadmap into a work breakdown structure for the instrumentation team. Can decompose highly complex and ambiguous requirements into concrete work packages.

  • Manages the team workload on the 6-to-12-monthbasis (day to day work is managed by technical leaders)

  • Expert reference in a wide range oftopics regarding instrumentation engineering. It is expected that the candidate has good theoretical background on process instrumentation & control and can engage into complex technical discussions.

  • Develops a strategy for GLOBAL standard & requirement compliance (Europe, North America, ASIA)

  • Has strong technical competency in all areas instrumentation and control (architecture design, analyzers, control valves, on-off valves, pressure/DP, level, temperature, flow measurements, functional safety/SIL, hazardous area classification).

  • Provides strong problem resolution leadership to the team, dealing with both technical and non-technical issues.

  • Must be able to handle a global set-up(global team members, different technical requirements across regions).

  • Excellent communication skills to engage different stakeholders across different functions (technical, non-technical).

  • Must be able to deal with complex and sometimes contradicting requirements. Can handle ambiguity by decomposing major goals into achievable work packages.
