Hydrogen Safety Specialist


We are looking for a talented Hydrogen Safety Specialist to join our team specializing in sales for our #NewPower Business Unit in Mississauga, Ontario.

  • Manages, develops, and implements complex health, safety and environmental programs in collaboration with cross functional teams. Manages teams directly and/or indirectly and partners with key business stakeholders to ensure a successful project completion.

  • Builds strong relationships across functions within all levels of the organization. Demonstrates a commitment to driving a positive health, safety and environmental culture, coaching others to do the same. Consults with employees giving them the opportunity to contribute to the development and implementation of programs, policies and procedures that will have a direct impact on their work environment.

  • Interprets results from hazard identification, environmental aspect identification and risk assessment programs to identify strategic risk improvement projects and gaps in health, safety and environmental compliance obligations. Monitors and measures health, safety and environmental performance metrics, legal compliance findings, and internal and external audit results to identify and prioritize projects using a risk-based data-driven approach.

  • Directs project teams to establish project performance goals; designs project plan, develops timeline, identifies project milestones, and tracks performance. Manages all project related costs, project risk and project resources. Monitors and communicates project status to respective stakeholders. Manages development and maintenance of project related metrics.

  • Leads projects from identification through implementation utilizing Cummins approved methodologies. Ensures all stakeholder needs are met using the plan, do, check, act methodology, driving continuous improvement throughout the site(s).

  • Manages development of project related support materials for training, skills development and internal communications. Provides training where required. Leads development and maintenance of policies, procedures, tools and resources for assigned projects ensuring they are up to date, controlled and available while adhering to data privacy regulations.

  • Leads cross-functional teams to define and implement innovative solutions to eliminate or reduce risk to as low as practical.

  • Supports site(s) Health, Safety, Environmental Management Systems through participation in site audits.

  • Coaches all employees and cross functional teams on health, safety and environmental processes based on stakeholder feedback or observations. Coaches and develops direct reports to build capability and team effectiveness. Actively seeks opportunities for self-development through professional health, safety and environmental organizations, as a champion of emerging trends.

Education, Licenses, Certifications

  • College, university, or equivalent degree required. Occupational Health, Safety or Environmental degree preferred.


  • Significant relevant experience required, including team leadership and project management. Experience with Industrial Safety Standards preferred. 5-7 years of experience.

  • Supports Cummins’ Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Technologies facilities with the development and implementation of safety engineering controls, processes and procedures to drive safety improvements. The focus of this role shall revolve around process and functional safety, using common hazard identification methodologies in order to identify the appropriate level of engineering controls required to mitigate or reduce the hazards.

  • This role shall support the business with the development of new Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Technologies facilities as well as the expansion of existing ones. Experience in construction and design management are desired.

  • As a project manager, good collaboration and communication skills are required as well as enthusiasm for new technologies with a focus on driving sustainable solutions. A high level of creativity and good problem solving skills will be required.

  • Experience in occupational health, safety, and environment is preferred. This includes but is not limited to: familiarity with ISO 14001 and 45001, incident investigation experience, development and implementation of occupational health, safety, and environmental programs, development and delivery of safety or environmental related training, gathering, interpreting, and analyzing of complex data sets.

  • Experience with Hydrogen, Fuel Cell and/or Electrolyzer applications, or similar industry highly preferred

  • Experience in Process Safety Management

  • Experience with HAZOP/FMEA/PHA or other risk identification and analysis methodologies

  • Project management skills and experience at either a regional or global level

  • Familiar with Functional Safety standards (ISO 26262)

  • Familiar with Hydrogen standards (NFPA 2, ISO/TC 197)

  • Familiar with occupational health, safety, and environmental standards (ISO 45001, ISO 14001)

  • Able to read and interpret engineering drawings (P&ID)

  • Experienced in safety related incident investigations
